Vali (or Ali), in Norse mythology, a son of the principal god, Odin, and
a giantess named Rinda. Although not much is known about him, according to
the 'Prose (or Younger) Edda', he was bold in battle and an excellent marksman.
Vali grew to adulthood in a single day. He never washed his hands or combed
his hair. He killed the blind god Hod, another son of Odin, to avenge the
death of the good and beautiful god Balder, whom Hod had been tricked into
killing by the trickster fire god Loki. Hence Vali is associated with acts
of vengeance. Vali, along with his brother, Vidar, and two sons of Thor named
Modi and Magni, were believed to be the only gods who would survive Ragnarok,
the battle at the end of the world.
